Abstract

1519493 Radiation curing of coatings ENERGY SCIENCES INC 10 June 1975 [9 Dec 1974] 24822/75 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions B5 and Dl] A process for electron-beam curing of a coating comprises passing the coated substrate along a predetermined path, directing electron strip beam radiation through an electronpermeable window at a preselected region of the path with the radiation extending linearly along the path, accelerating the radiation in a direction substantially perpendicular to the path, adjusting the radiation within energy limits of from 50 to 30 KeV and with doses of 0.5-8 megarads in dependence of the thickness and materials of the coating and substrate so that a maximum amount of electron beam energy is concentrated in the coating to cure the coating, with minimum beam energy concentration in the substrate. The method may be used to apply a pressuresensitive adhesive to paper, vinyl, vinylasbestos, cork, wood, cotton, polystyrene, nylon, urethane film and leather. The method is also particularly suitable for application of coatings to strand-like substrates such as wires, cables, filaments, strings, yarns and threads. A reflector may be positioned behind the substrate to reflect the radiation back onto the coated substrate. In an embodiment the coating is first applied to release sheet, cured by radiation, a tie coat is applied to the first coat and the substrate applied to the tie coat.
