Abstract
1518571 Measuring speed and acceleration REYROLLE PARSONS Ltd 5 April 1977 [14 April 1976] 15371/76 Heading G1N The invention relates to a method of an appar- atus for determining linear or rotational speed and/or acceleration of a moving body relative to a fixed reference body. The method comprises the steps of providing on one of the bodies a system of equally spaced marks, e.g. a toothed wheel, in the direction of relative motion, converting the time intervals between the passage of successive marks past a reference point on the other body into signals indicative of speed and acceleration of the moving body, and using a comparison system in which an input parameter to an integration arranged within the system is iteratively integrated for successive periods related to the time intervals. The output parameter from the integration arrangement at the end of each period is controlled to approach a desired reference value by feeding to the input of the integration arrangement an incrementally corrected input parameter, the incremental correction in which is derived as a proportion of the error between the desired and obtaining output parameters following an iteration. Thus the input parameter becomes representative of the required speed of the moving body after one or more successive iterations and acceleration of the body may be determined on terms of the error in output parameter. The aforesaid proportion of the error is derived in terms of the quotient of the input parameter representative of the standing value of measured speed divided by the desired value of the output parameter. The acceleration is derived from the product of the error in the output parameter following an iteration and the square of the input parameter representative of the steady value of the measured speed for that iteration.
