Abstract

1518100 Coil annealing BRITISH STEEL CORP 31 Oct 1975 [31 Oct 1974] 47198/74 Heading C7N In a method of annealing metal articles, particularly coils of steel strip, a protective, usually reducing gas is circulated inside a furnace cover around the articles to be annealed and through one side of a rotary heat exchanger, hot gases being passed through the other side of the heat exchanger, followed by cold gases to cool the protective gas. The hot and cold gases may be air. In carrying out an annealing the coils 12 of sheet steel are stacked on a pedestal 72 in well 16. Annealing furnace 10 is lowered and sealed at its periphery 14. Reducing gas is admitted to furnace 10 through inlet 18, and leaves through outlet 20. Circulation, powered by fan 24, is then through one side 44, 40 of rotary heat exchanger 22, in which the refractory or metallic matrix disc 30 with a plurality of honeycomb passages 32 is continuously driven by a central rotor and driveshaft 36. Hot gases from generator 26, or cold gases from inlet 28 are admitted countercurrently to the other side, 38, 42 of the heat exchanger to heat or cool the reducing gas circulating in the closed circuit. A flexible seal 46 extends between the gas ducts 38, 40 and 42, 44, seating on the face 34, Fig. 4 (not shown) of the matrix disc 30 to prevent contamination of the reducing and hot or cold gases.
