Abstract
1517964 Tapping molten metal BICC Ltd 16 July 1976 [18 July 1975] 30251/75 Heading F4B [Also in Division B3] Flow of molten metal from a container such as a furnace or tundish 1, e.g. for continuously casting rod and wire as described in Specifications 1,516,306 and 1,499,809 (see Division B3) is controlled by inducing an alternating electromagnetic field, e.g. by closely wound coil 7, about a stream flowing from an outlet, so as to set up an electrodynamic force in the stream and compress it inwardly so that it flows along the surface of an elongate member 4 lying along the neutral axis of the field, e.g. in a spout 2, the strength of the field being adjusted to regulate the rate of flow and the force being set up throughout at least an outer part of the stream, which can be stopped completely by the field adjustment. The elongate member 4 may be suspended from a support 3 or the member and the spout 2 may be formed as a single body, being connected by a fin or fins.
