Abstract

A noble metal-containing honeycomb body catalyst provided with an oxide support interlayer is prepared by a honeycomb body made of refractory material first being heated to from 300 to 400 DEG C and while still hot being immersed in an aqueous solution of a readily decomposable aluminium salt. After from 1 to 60 minutes the honeycomb body is removed from the solution, dried at 110 DEG C for from 0.5 to 5 hours, heated to 400 DEG C over from 0.5 to 5 hours and finally annealed at 700 DEG C for from 0.5 to 10 hours. The honeycomb body coated with the aluminium oxide layer is immersed at from 300 to 400 DEG C in an aqueous solution of a readily decomposable nickel salt and left therein for from 1 to 60 minutes. Then the honeycomb body is dried at 110 DEG C for from 0.5 to 5 hours, heated to from 350 to 450 DEG C over from 0.5 to 5 hours and left at this temperature for from 0.5 to 10 hours. The honeycomb body coated with the aluminium oxide layer and the nickel oxide layer is immersed in an aqueous solution of a readily decomposable platinum salt and left therein for from 1 to 60 minutes. The liquid located in the channels of the honeycomb body is shaken out thoroughly. Then the honeycomb body impregnated with the platinum salt is first dried for from 0.5 to 5 hours with flowing hot air of from 90 to 110 DEG C and is then heated to from 180 to 220 DEG C for from 0.5 to 5 hours, to from 300 to 400 DEG C for from 0.5 to 5 hours and to from 500 to 700 DEG C for from 0.5 to 10 hours.
