Abstract

1488556 Removing organic compounds from gases BAYER AG 24 June 1975 [27 July 1974] 26719/75 Heading ClA Organic compounds are removed from a gas by combustion in the presence of a catalyst which contains metal selected from Co, Ni, Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir or Pt carried on a support which is composed at least partly of lithium aluminium spinel. The support preferably contains more than 50% by weight of said spinel and the metal is present in amounts of 0À01-2% by weight. The gas may contain 0À01-10% by weight of organic compounds. The spinel may be made by impregnating Al 2 O 3 of high surface area with an aqueous lithium salt solution, e.g. LiOH, drying the impregnated supports and converting the salts to oxides by heating to 250-650‹ C., if appropriate in the presence of O- or H- containing gases. The material may then be heated to 900-1, 300‹ C. for a period of 1-10 hours to cause the spinel to form. The surface area and pore diameter of the spinel may be varied by changes in the calcination temperature and duration. The catalyst may be made by applying a salt of the metal to the thus formed spinel and precipitating the metal by reduction, e,g. with hydrazine hydrate.
