Abstract

1516589 Fire-retardant insulating panel CLARK DOOR CO INC 11 Nov 1976 47016/76 Heading E1J A fire-retardant panel suitable for a door for a cold storage chamber comprises an outer casing 5, 6 of, preferably metal, sheeting and top, bottom and side channel-section members 7 (8, 10, 11) with an inner layer 15 e.g. #-“ inches thick of a hydrous alkalimetal silicate, preferably reinforced with asbestos or glass fibres and a core 18 of foamed plastics material, preferably polyurethane. The top channel member 7 preferably has vents 13 closed by a polyethylene film and openable under fire conditions to allow fumes to escape. The alkali metal silicate composition is preferably of sodium or potassium with 10-40% water and may include up to 20% of bentonite or diatomaceous earth and up to 30% of the fibre reinforcement, it may be applied as a slurry and dried or compressed in situ or formed into sheets and attached by adhesives. Under fire conditions the silicate composition intumesces and forms a layer protecting the highly inflammable foamed core.
