Abstract

1516555 Plasticized sulphur compositions CHEVRON RESEARCH CO 9 June 1976 [4 Aug 1975] 23744/76 Heading C1A [Also in Division C5] A plasticized sulphur composition comprises at least 50% by weight total sulphur, based on the total composition, a sulphur plasticizer, an aromatic polysulphide comprising the product obtained by reacting one mol of an aromatic carbocyclic or a heterocyclic compound, substituted by at least one functional group selected from -OH and -NHR in which R is H or C, to C 4 alkyl, with at least two mols of sulphur, and an inorganic filler selected from mica, asbestos and an asbestos-talc mixture. Suitably 2 to 25% of the filler is present; glass fibres may also be present in addition to the other fillers. Preferred sulphur plasticizers (which are defined as excluding aromatic polysulphides having free OH or NHR groups) include aliphatic linear polysulphides, dioctyl phthalate, acrylic acid, epoxidised soy bean oil, triglycerides and tall oil fatty acid. An aliphatic linear polysulphide with one or more ether linkages and having the recurring unit -S x CH 2 CH 2 OCH 2 OCH 2 CH 2 S x - where x is an integer of about 2 is especially preferred but many others are listed. An aromatic polysulphide formed by reacting phenol with sulphur is preferred. The composition may be applied molten to the walls of buildings.
