Abstract
1516045 Magnetic head supports BURROUGHS CORP 8 May 1976 19014/76 Heading E2A [Also in Division G5] An adjustable magnetic head holder permitting lateral head centering and azimuth adjustment relative to a record track RC has a support 2 for the head 6, and means 10 attaching the support 2 to a mounting 4 and allowing relative displacement therebetween, each of members 2, 4 including three coupling elements 30a, 30b, 30c and 40a, 40b, 40c respectively, having axes located to define the corner of an isosceles, and preferably equilateral triangle, all the axes being parallel and perpendicular to a plane containing the two triangles, the coupling elements 30 engaging with respective coupling elements 40 and one set of such elements being fixed relative to their member 2 or 4 and the other set being rotatable about their respective axes, each rotatable coupling element having means constraining the displacement relative thereto of the corresponding fixed element to a rectilinear path, azimuth adjustment being effected by rotating a first said rotatable element and centering adjustment being effected by rotating the other two rotatable elements through equal amounts in opposite directions to one another. Head 6 is resiliently held intermediate legs 16 of support 2 by closed-loop springs 22, and support 2 is attached to a carriage 4 by a fastener 10 around which support 2 is rotatable and which has a shank received in a vertically elongated opening 14 in carriage 4, the carriage 4 being mounted on pins in slots 8 therethrough. Fixed pins 40a to 40c on carriage 4 are received in grooves (38), Fig. 3a (not shown), diametral to the axes of rotatable coupling elements 30a, 30b, 30c which are equispaced from the axis of fastener 10 and have screwdriver slots (36a) to facilitate rotation. Starting from a position Fig. 5 (not shown), in which the groove (38a) in element 30a is vertical and the tangents (Tl), (T2) at pins 40b, 40c to the pitch circle (PC2) through pins 40a, 40b, 40c intersect at the centre point (HC) of the head gap, centering or height adjustment of head 6 is effected without affecting the azimuth setting by rotating elements 30b, 30c through equal and opposite angles. Azimuth or skew adjustment of the head is then effected by rotating element 30a. Unless the azimuth adjustment starts from a position in which said tangents (Tl), (T2) intersect at the gap centre point (HC), such azimuth adjustment also causes a height adjustment but this is usually small and can be corrected, if necessary, by rotating element 30a. Support 2 and head 6 can be removed and replaced on carriage 4 without the need for subsequent height and azimuth adjustment.
