1361601 Photo-electric dimension checking NORTH ATLANTIC RESEARCH PRODUCTS Ltd 24 June 1971 [25 March 1970 26 Jan 1971] 14576/70 and 3221/71 Addition to 1048585 Heading G4H In apparatus for checking the dimensions generally of moving objects of the type whereby an optical image of the object is projected on to an array of photo-cells wherein a particular photo-cell when covered by the leading edge of the image causes the conditions of 2 or more cells situated near the other edge to be read into a logic unit to provide information as to whether the object is under-, over- or of the correct size, the image is caused to be cyclically moved across the array of cells in a direction at right angles to the motion of the body. In Fig. 1 (not shown) the cell array (3) itself is moved at right angles to the motion of an elongate body, e.g. a tube (1) whose diameter is required, by a motor and cam assembly or motor and clock unit. In Fig. 2 (not shown) a parallel prism (18) is interposed between the body (9) and image (13) and rotated to oscillate the image across triggering cell (15) and measuring cells (16), (17). In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), circular components, e.g. pistons (19) are placed on a rotating table (R) and a rotating prism (U) is employed in co-operation with the table to provide read-out of the diameter of the piston at particular arc intervals.
