Abstract
1367808 Electric stepping motors XYNETICS Inc 31 Aug 1972 [8 Sept 1971] 40462/72 Heading H2A A positioning arrangement providing controlled relative movement, with two degrees of freedom, between a head and a base member operates on the stepping-motor principle described either in Specification 1,197,065 or in Specification 1,257,251, but movement corresponding to the first and second degrees of freedom is produced by co-operation between the head and separate first and second areas of the base member respectively. In Fig. 6 the head 218 and base member 200 are both generally flat. Areas 202, 204 of the base carry parallel magnetic ribs 210, 212 and co-operate with head electromagnets 224, 226 for movement in the X direction, whilst base areas 206, 208 carry ribs running perpendicularly to the ribs 210, 212, and co-operate with head electromagnets 228, 230 for movement in the Y direction. An open work area 232 is left on the base, and the head carries a tool which is to be moved across this area. In another embodiment with a flat head and base (Fig. 1, not shown) the base is divided into two outer striplike areas (14, 18) for movement in the X direction, with a central area (16) between them for movement in the Y direction. In Fig. 4 the head 110 and base 100 are both cylindrical, an area 102 of the base carrying annular ribs for axial relative movement (Z), and an area 104 carrying axially-parallel ribs for rotational movement (#). In Fig. 5 the base 150 is spherical and the head 164 comprises two separate portions 166, 168 which are joined by a rod 170 pivoted (172) at the centre of the sphere. Outer areas 152, 156 of the base are ribbed for rotation parallel to a horizontal plane (#), whilst a central area 154 is ribbed for rotation parallel to a vertical plane (#).
