Abstract
1371265 Machining spherical surfaces LENINGRADSKY METALLICHESKY ZAVOD IMENI XXII SIEZDA KPSS 7 March 1972 10596/72 Headings B3T and B3B A machine tool for turning spherical surfaces comprises a faceplate 2 on which a workpiece is mounted a tool carrying lever 6 having a ball and socket connection 5 between one end of the lever 6 and a support 4 mounted on the faceplate, the geometric centre of the ball and socket lying at a point on the axis of rotation of the faceplate. A traversing arm 10 is pivotally connected intermediate the ends of the lever 6 and a rotary cutting insert 19 at the other end of the lever. The traversing motion of the arm 10 pivots the lever 6 about the ball-and-socket joint whereby the cutting insert 19 moves in an arcuate path across the surfaces of the rotating workpiece. The cutting insert is inclined to the direction of movement of the lever so as to promote selfrotation of the insert. The control of the rotation of the insert is effected by a rope and pulley system 21 to 24 to permit one revolution of the cutting insert during one pass of the tool across the surface of the workpiece. Figs. 1 and 2 show respectively apparatus for machining internal and external surfaces.
