Abstract
1515911 Electronic timepieces SOC SUISSE POUR L'INDUSTRIE HORLOGERE MANAGEMENT SERVICES SA 23 Feb 1976 [12 March 1975] 10310/75 Heading G3T [Also in Division H2] In an electronic timepiece having a stepping motor driving a time display, it is arranged that the motor drive pulses are not supplied directly from a battery P but from a capacitor C which is charged from the battery in the intervals between motor steps. The timepiece (Fig. 1) comprises an integrated circuit CI including an oscillator followed by a frequency divider and continuously energized by the battery P to provide low frequency pulses to control the motor drive circuit including switches 1-5 (e.g. M.O.S.-F.E.T.s). The cycle of operation is as follows:- (1) switches 1, 2 are closed and 3, 4, 5 opened so that capacitor C is charged in one direction via a resistor R; (2) switch 5 is closed, and the switches 1-4 opened so that capacitor C discharges through the motor winding LM in one direction to advance the motor by one step; (3) switches 3, 4 are closed and 1, 2, 5 opened so that capacitor C is charged in the opposite direction; (4) switch 5 is closed and switches 1-4 opened so that capacitor C will discharge through winding, in the opposite direction to that of stage 2, to advance the motor by another step. The cycle is then repeated. Since the motor winding and capacitor form an oscillatory circuit their component values are selected so that a halfperiod of oscillation is equal to the duration of one step of the motor. A non-polarized capacitor, e.g. tantalum type, is used.
