Abstract

1514768 Aero-dynamic bearing DR JOHANNES HEIDENHAIN GmbH 22 July 1975 [25 July 1974] 30662/75 Heading F2A [Also in Division D1] A spinning or twisting ring is mounted on an aero-dynamic bearing which provides both radial and axial air cushion support wherein the ring is mounted on a rotor having at least one outwardly directed flange 4 with annular bearing surface 11 and the stator 2 has at least one bearing surface 6 which has a slightly projecting surface area which is in contact with the bearing surface 11 of the rotor when the ring 3 is stationary and during start up. In the embodiment, the ring 3 is carried by a rotor 1 having external radial flanges 4, 5. Flange 5 may incorporate a brake disc of an eddy current brake. The stator 2 has radial flanges 6, 7 in close proximity to bearing surfaces 11, 12 of the flanges 4 and 5 of the rotor 2. The inner surfaces of the stator 2 may have a coating 8 of a synthetic material in which are formed spiral grooves in the bearing surfaces 6, 7. The spiral grooves and projecting surface areas may be alternatively or additionally formed in the bearing surfaces of the rotor.
