Abstract

1514497 Producing relief plates SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 31 Oct 1975 [31 Oct 1974] 45159/75 Heading B6C A relief printing plate is produced from synthetic fibres or a synthetic fibre/natural pulp blend by forming into a fibrous sheet, providing a 10 to 100 microns thick film on the surface of the sheet and pressing the filmsurfaced side of the sheet against a matrix; the fibres or fibre blend must have a modulus of resilience not greater than 40%. The synthetic fibres, although generally short, have a broad distribution of lengths thereamongst; they can be made by shredding a stretched film into chips and bearing, by ejecting a solution or emulsion through a nozzle to form fibres or pulp, or by melt-spinning two or more poorly compatible resins and beating. The sheet is then made by a conventional wet or dry paper-making procedure; the surface film is produced by melting a surface layer, e.g. by passing between heated plates or rollers, by bonding a thin thermoplastics resin film on to the sheet, or by applying a polymer solution or emulsion as a coating and drying. The film may be provided on both sides of the sheet. The pressing process may be effected at room temperature or at any temperature below the flow point of the fibres.
