Abstract
1514486 Superconductive arrangments SCIENCE RESEARCH COUNCIL 22 Aug 1975 [22 Aug 1974] 36910/74 Heading H3X [Also in Division H2] A superconductor supplied from an alternating current source is periodically switched to the non- conducting state by a pulse of heat synchronized with the onset of each non-conducting half cycle to develop a resistive region, the heat pulse being produced by a pulse of current having a duration of less than one quarter of a cycle (e.g. 2 milliseconds for a frequency of 50 cycles per second) which is applied to each of a plurality of stainless steel or constantan heating foils 2, 4, 6 spaced across the parallel wires 8, 10, 12, 14 forming the superconductor. When switching to the non-conducting state is effected, the superconductor has a resistive region produced initially by the heat pulse which subsequently expands and then contracts along the length of the superconductor wires during the remainder of the half cycle. The arrangement may be applied to the flux pump described in Specification 1,513,153, the wires 8-14 being paired to form the oppositely wound superconductive windings.
