Abstract
1514457 Self-homing missile VEREINIGTE FLUGTECHNISCHE WERKE - FOKKER GmbH 29 June 1972 [22 Oct 1971] 30750/72 Heading F3A [Also in Division H4] A defensive weapon system (Fig. 1) suitable for use against low-flying aerial targets comprises a ground control system 1 employing lasers for target location and weapon control, and a missile 6 equipped with a homing head (Fig. 3) which, in operation, assumes control of the missile after the latter has been directed towards a target 8 by the ground control system. As described, a laser locating unit 2 is used to provide target detection and location signals to a laser control unit 3. The latter guides the launched missile 6 during an initial phase. The homing head scans the area ahead of the missile and, when the target 8 is detected and located by such scanning, the continued guidance of the missile to the intercept with target 8 is performed under the control of the homing head. The latter is sensitive preferably to infra-red radiation whereby it can track the target by detection of radiation from its exhaust, engines, &c. Preferably, the laser locating unit 2 provides infrared target illumination so that, should the homing head be unable to track the target as described above, it may track it by means of laser-radiation reflected therefrom. The homing head includes a primary mirror 33 which receives incident radiation 31 and directs it, via a secondary mirror 34 and narrow band filter 35 to a detector 36. Signals from the detector 36 are passed to a pick-up 37 which, in co-operation with a gyroscope arrangement 38, controls adjusting members 39 to adjust the rudder of the missile.
