Abstract

1350002 Missile guidance system SOC ANON DE TELECOMMUNICATIONS 22 Oct 1971 [22 Oct 1970] 49108/71 Heading H4D In a system for guiding a missile E, Fig. 1, to a target C, a ground control station O comprising Figs. 4, 5, an optical aiming sight 39 for directing at the target, and an optical missile tracker system, comprising an infra-red laser 10, having its beam amplitude modulated by an identifying oscillation from generator 24 in means 11 and directed towards the missile by a mirror 15. If the missile is caught by the beam, a reflector thereon directs part of the beam back to the ground station where mirror 15 directs it, via optics 16, 17 to a photo detector 21. The position of the missile within the beam and thus the position of the reflected infra-red image on the detector surface, is determined using a reticle 22 having alternate opaque and transparent sectors and having its centre rotated about the axis of the detector. The detector output is thus pulse frequency modulated in known manner, enabling the determination of the polar co. ordinates of the image on the detector. Such co-ordinates enable a computer 26 to furnish tracking signals for the mirror 15 via its servomotors 31, 32. The computer also determines the angle a between the line of sight to the target as given by aiming sight pick offs 29, 30-and encodes control information for the missile at 38, the coded information being transmitted to the missile by further modulation of the laser beam.
