Abstract

1294081 Guided missiles; war rockets USA ARMY SECRETARY OF 19 Jan 1966 [19 July 1965] 2584/66 Headings F3A and F3C A wire or radio guided missile 1 is automatically steered towards a target 3 by a missile tracking unit 13 which detects infrared radiation from a sodium flare 4 attached to the missile, this unit being mounted together with a telescope 15 on a stock 17. In use, the crosswires of the telescope are maintained on the target. The unit 13 includes, Fig. 4, a cassegrain optical system having a mirror 47 which reflects radiation from the flare 4'on to a skewed mirror 49 driven by a motor unit 65. Radiation from the mirror 49 reaches an IR detector 57 through a fixed chopper reticule 51, Fig. 5, so that the detector has an A.C. output. For a missile off axis, the radiation image describes an off-centre circle 84 in the reticule 51 and the detector output is modulated. This output is amplified at 21 and demodulated at 23 to produce a signal 82 in the form of a frequencymodulated/carrier wave. This signal 82 is fed to a network 25 where it is compared with a reference signal derived from a reference signal generator integral with the motor unit 65. The outputs 86, 87 from the network 25 are supplied through azimuth and elevation channels to the missile dynamics 40 to control the missile. Firing of the missile 1 from a launcher 7 is controlled by a trigger 11.
