1514454 Change-speed gear ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN AG 14 June 1977 24738/77 Heading F2D A one-piece gear-box housing G has a front opening closed by a cover 4 in which the input shaft 3, driven through an optional hydrodynamic torque converter 1, is mounted, the opening being of sufficient size to permit the insertion into the housing of pre-assembled layshaft gears, clutches and bearings which rotate on layshafts 6, 11, 18 inserted through the rear of the housing and made fast therewith by bolts through flanges 6a, lla, 18a. Fluidoperated, multi-plate clutches K1, K2 enable a gear 8 to be coupled with either or both of gears 7, 10, and similar assemblies are mounted on the other layshafts. The layshafts 6, 11 are so positioned that their gears 7, 12 mesh with an input gear 5, and gears 8, 10 mesh respectively with gears 13, 15. The gear 13 meshes also with a gear 20 on the layshaft 18, a gear 22 on the latter meshes both with an output gear 23 driving front and rear couplings 24a, 24b and with a gear 17 fast with the gear 15, and a gear 19 is coupled with the gear 12 by a gear 25 rotatable on a shaft 25a, the arrangement providing four forward and three reverse ratios. A shaft 2 for engine driven auxiliaries to be coupled at 27 is rotatable in the hollow input shaft 3.
