1514324 Iodophor disinfectant composition J A O JOHANSSON 21 July 1975 30460/75 Headings A5B and A5E [Also in Division C3] A disinfectant composition contains iodine complexed to a hydrophilic organic carrier, which complex is in the form of a three dimensional lattice, kept together by covalent bonds, and which is insoluble in water but capable of swelling in water to form a gel. The carrier can be prepared by a polymerisation/cross linking reaction of a polyhydroxylic organic substance by means of a bi-functional organic cross linking agent of the type Y-R-Z, where Y and Z each represent epoxy groups or halogen atoms and R is an aliphatic organic residue lacking dissociating groups. Suitable polyhydroxylic substances are monosaccharides, disaccharides, polysaccharides, synthetic polyhydroxylic polymers and sugar alcohols. By suitable substitution of the carrier with anionic or cationic groups iodophors can be prepared having also ion exchange properties. The composition may be formulated as a skin and wound cream.
