1513967 Valves S NAKAMURA 8 Aug 1975 [9 Aug 1974] 33231/75 Heading F2V [Also in Division G5] A tuning valve in a brass musical instrument includes a plurality of transfer pipes 26-32, Fig. 2, for connecting different pipe loops 20-25 in series with the basic pipe L. The embodiment shown in Fig. 2, is a rotatable valve having seven discrete angular positions providing a direct connection via transfer pipe 26 between the inlet and outlet ends of pipe L or via pipe loop 20 or a series of pipe loops starting at 20 and associated transfer pipes 27-32, see for example Fig. 4-3. The valve is rotated by depressing combinations of three keys 33-35, Fig. 3 coupled by pivoted levers 40, 41 to a rack 37 and pinion 36 which rotates the valve rotor. A second embodiment, Fig. 5 includes an upper piston valve with a single pipe loop 71 and a lower rotary valve with two sets of pipe loops 68-70 and 72-74, depression of the piston valve connecting pipe loop 71 alone or in series with one, two or all three of the pipe loops 68-70 or 72-74 between the inlet and outlet ends of the basic pipe L. A (two key) actuating mechanism for rotating the rotor, similar to that of the first embodiment, is used. A third embodiment, Figs. 9-11 (not shown), comprises a rotary valve with three transfer pipes connecting up to two pipe loops in series with the basic pipe. Figs. 12-14 (not shown) illustrate a four-key, 12-position-rotary valve.
