Abstract

1513817 Recognizing shapes AGENCY OF INDUSTRIAL SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY 7 July 1975 [8 July 1974] 28602/75 Heading G4R A shape having at least a plurality of straight sides is determined by projecting the shape on to a fixed plane, e.g. using a video camera, to provide a series of projection values. The values are differentiated to determine where the junctions between the sides occur so that the signal shown in Fig. 2c represents the slope of the outline of Fig. 2a. The differentiated valves are then further differentiated. The shape or the camera is rotated and the angle of rotation measured. The angle is noted when the second differentiation indicates that a side of the shape is parallel to the fixed plane. The different angles detected and the length of each side, determined when it is parallel to the plane, can be compared with a list to determine which shape has been detected, or can be displayed.
