Abstract

1513728 Mechanica switches; automatic circuit breakers HOTPOINT LTD 28 Aug 1975 [30 Aug 1974] 38041/74 Heading H1N A thermally responsive switching arrangement comprises a rotary switch biased towards an off position and angularly movable to selected positions in each of which it is connected in circuit with a thermally responsive device 29, electromagnetically releasable locking means 19 for retaining the rotary switch in the desired angular position and which is released so that the rotary switch returns to the off position when the thermally responsive device 29 responds to a predetermined temperature. The rotary switch comprises a rotatable shaft 4 connected to a disc 5 carrying a wiper arm 6 for bridging pairs of contacts 8 on a printed circuit board 9. The contact pairs 8 are connected to switches 29 responsive to different predetermined temperatures of a washing liquid of a washing machine (or of a tumbler dryer). When the shaft 4 is moved against spring bias 30 to a selected position in which the arm 6 bridges one of the contact pairs 8, the contacts 33, 36 of a microswitch 15 are changed over by a cam 13 connected to the shaft 4 causing a heating element 34 of the washing machine to be energised. The shaft 4 is retained in the selected angular position by a spring biased armature 19 engaging a groove 18 in a member 12 connected to the shaft 4. When the predetermined temperature corresponding to the selected position of the rotary switch has been reached, the relevant thermal switch 29 is closed causing current to flow through the contact pair 8, the thermal switch 29 and through the winding 27 of an electromagnet 25 which releases the armature 19 from the groove 18 causing the shaft 4 to return to the off position by the spring 30 and the contacts 33, 36 of the mainswitch 15 to change over again.
