Abstract

1513666 Laminates CARL FREUDENBERG 25 July 1975 [10 Aug 1974] 31103/75 Heading B5N [Also in Division H1] A battery separator comprises an array of rectilinear filaments disposed between two superposed sheets of thermoplastic fibres, in which the sheets are spot fused together so that the filaments are unbonded, and in which the spot-fused area is from 2 to 40% of the total area of the separator. Preferably the fibres are corded and the corded web is passed between a heated embossed roll and a resilient roll. In the example 0À4 mm diameter monofilament polyester filaments were introduced at 0À5 cm intervals between 2 polyester fibre fleeces and the fleeces laminated together by spot fusing in rows between the filaments which produced 0À1 to 0À2 mm high ridges in the separator. The fibres may be polypropylene, polyethylene, polyester, nylon bb, nylon b, polycarbonate or mixtures thereof and may comprise or include heterofibres. The separator has a thickness of 0À05 to 1 mm. Fibres lengths and deniers and separator absorbency and tear strengths are specified. The separators may be used in sulphuric acid and alkaline storage batteries and in tubular batteries. The ribs may extend out of the electrolyte thus allowing gases to escape along the channels formed by the ribs, the separator and the electrodes.
