Abstract

1513167 Human-powered machines C A KALLANDER 6 June 1975 24371/75 Heading B7E A human-powered machine, e.g. a bicycle, comprises an elongate flexible member 3 spirally wound upon a rotatable member 24 to which it is connected at one end, a hand or foot operated lever 101 displaceable to withdraw the member 3 from the member 24 and rotate the latter, and means, e.g. spring 7, for rewinding the member 3 on the member 24, the member 24 being connected through a one-way clutch 35 to a driven member, e.g. rear wheel 21, to drive the latter in one direction. The member 3 has a portion which increases in thickness with distance from the end of the member 3 connected to the member 24, such that the mechanical advantage between the lever 101 and member 24 varies through the stroke of the lever. The tapering portion of the member 3 may, as shown in Fig. 6, be formed by a plurality of spaced blocks 4 of different thickness mounted on the member.
