A vehicle track braking device comprises a number of flexible mats formed by chain links or the like connected at one end of the mats to a shaft 1 rotatably mounted on the vehicle, the other end of the mats being connected to a common cross-bar 13 such that in the inoperative position shown in Fig. 1 the mats are held in a rolled position by a spring-loaded plunger 5 which enters a hole in a central coupling 3 of the shaft 1 and when the driver operates a handle 10 the plunger 5 is withdrawn to allow the mats to fall in front of the set of vehicle wheels 15 so that the latter are able to move forward over the free ends of the mats to exert a braking effect on the vehicle, as shown in Fig. 2.
