1512282 Photographic type-composing ADDRESSOGRAPH-MULTIGRAPH CORP 6 March 1975 [25 June 1974] 9445/75 Heading B6W A stepping motor 21 drives a photosensitive film forwardly in line-spacing direction from a container 35 by means of rollers 18, 19 through a one-way clutch and when reversed drives rollers 29 through a spring clutch to tend to drive the film in reverse. In operation, the film is fed forwards until the leading edge or a reference mark is detected by a photochromic sensor 30 which passes a signal to a computer 34 which stops the motor and starts the exposure procedure so that a column of lines is composed on the left-hand part of the film, the motor now driving the film intermittently for line-spacing. When the column is composed, the motor is reversed to drive the film backwards beyond the point at which the column was started, and then driven forwards until the sensor 30 again passes a signal, when a second column is composed to the right of and aligned with the first column. When the film is driven backwards, the clutch 24 does not transmit motion from the rollers 18, 19 to the motor, and when it is driven forwards, the spring clutch slips. By composing at least one character on the first column baseline, then performing the reverse feed followed by a forward feed adjusted by a fractional leading distance, subscript or superscript characters can then be composed to obtain an irregular base line comparison.
