Abstract

1511904 Filter cartridges and filter units TECAFILTRES 24 April 1975 [24 April 1974] 17125/75 Headings B1D and BIT A generally annular filter element is attached to two pre-formed end plates by heating the plates to softening point and pressing them on to the ends of the element between two platens to embed the element therein. The element may be resin-impregnated pleated paper, pleated cotton fabric supported between sleeves of perforated or woven metal or plastics, or polyurethane foam. The end plates are polypropylene, polyethylene, or polyacetal or methacrylate resins. They may be simple discs cut from a flat sheet or more complex moulded shapes including sealing rings to engage parts of an enclosing housing or forming a cover for the housing (Fig. 7 not shown) or the two halves of the housing itself (Fig. 8) to make a complete disposable filter unit. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the pressing platens engage the whole areas of the end plates and are heated by internal electric elements or tubes carrying hot fluid. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the platens expose annular areas of the end plates for heating by hot air jets. In Fig. 4 the end plates 26, 27 are similarly exposed for heating by infra-red radiators 30, 31, while the tubular filter element 23 (of foamed polyurethane) is supported temporarily by means 24, 25. Sealing rings may be formed as integral parts of end plates (Fig. 5 not shown) or as separate rings of neoprene or polyurethane which may be embedded in the end plates in the same operation as embedding the filter element (Fig. 6 not shown). The cartridges or units may be used as I.C. engine air intake filters or to filter oil or water. Claims are limited to the constructions wherein the end plates form part of the housing.
