Abstract

563,687. Filters. PERKS, C. C. Feb. 5, 1943, No. 1955. [Class 46] [Also in Group XXVIII] A filter for liquids or gases comprises one or more filter elements radially disposed around a hollow perforated member which is closed at one end and which is mounted in a casing, the member and the casing each being connected to the liquid or gas system, and each filter element consisting of two or more facially contiguous layers of non-resilient perforated material and two or more outer layers of felt or finely woven fabric disposed one or more on each side of the perforated material and having their edges secured together outside the edges of the inner layers. According to one construction, the filter comprises a casing 5 having a cover 4 into which is screwed a tubular member 1. This member is also screwed into an outlet pipe 7 and is formed with two longitudinal slots 2 communicating with the interiors of a number of filter elements 8. Each element consists of two layers 18, Fig. 3, of coarsely woven metallic fabric and two layers 17 of felt, the peripheries of the layers 17 being stitched together. The layers 18 may each consist as shown of corrugated wefts and warps, or may alternatively consist of a flat layer of warps over a flat layer of wefts. Or again they may comprise perforated corrugated plates, the corrugations of one layer being circumferential and those of the other radial. Unfiltered fluid enters the casing through an inlet 16 in the cover and normally passes through the elements into the member 1. The latter is fitted with a spring-urged ball valve 14 to provide a through passage for unfiltered liquid should the pressure rise as the result of the elements becoming clogged. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the non-return valve is located on the cover and the unfiltered liquid passes from the inlet to the outlet pipe without passing into the casing.
