1511514 Catalyst bed arrangements SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 7 May 1975 [9 May 1974] 19180/75 Heading C5E [Also in Division B1] In a process for hydro treating, e.g. at 455‹C and 175 atm, a liquid petroleum fraction, e.g. deasphalted Basrah oil, by passing it downwardly in the presence of hydrogen through a reactor containing spaced apart fixed catalyst beds and means for the supply of cold hydrogen-rich gas above each bed, at least one catalyst bed is covered with a lower layer of inert ceramic particles of 1-10 mm diameter, and an upper layer of inert ceramic particles of a > 10mm diameter, the layers together occupying at most 20% of the height of catalyst bed covered thereby. The > 10mm diameter particles may be Raschig rings or paddle-shaped. The beds may be vertically spaced with each bed covered by the particles, and the means for supplying cold hydrogen-rich gas may do so above each bed except the top one.
