Abstract

1414493 Hydrodesulphurizing asphaltic oil GULF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO 8 Dec 1972 [8 Dec 1971] 56784/72 Heading C5E Heavy asphaltic oil is hydrodesulphurized in a series of two reaction zones by downflow through beds of catalyst particles of diameter 0À64-1À3 mm. and comprising Group VI metal and Group VIII metal on alumina containing less than 1% silica, at a temperature of 360‹ to 427‹ C. which is increased within this range to compensate for catalyst ageing, the catalyst in each zone being operated for at least 3 months at a CHSV of 0À1 to 10; the hydrodesulphurization in the first zone is carried out at an average hydrogen partial pressure of 70-98 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP>, a light gas fraction and a portion of the light oil fraction boiling in the range 260-427‹ C. is separated from the effluent from the first zone and an asphaltic fraction together with the remainder of the light oil fraction is passed to the second hydrodesulphurization zone, the second hydrodesulphurization is carried out at an average hydrogen partial pressure of more than 98 kg./cm.i to produce a fuel oil product of which not less than 50% by weight has a boiling point greater than the initial boiling point of the feed oil and not more than 20% by weight has a boiling point lower than 191‹ C.
