Abstract

1511256 Plant propagation and packaging J F HINDS and M H HINDS [trading as ROWSONS NURSERIES] 19 May 1975 [21 Dec 1974] 55348/74 Heading A1E Plant storage means for propagation and/or storage comprises a thermally insulating flat member provided with a plurality of spaces all of which open at one end into one face of the member and at the other end into the other face of the member and being defined laterally by walls integral with the flat member, the one end of each space having an area twice that of the other end of the space. A slab 10 of expanded polystyrene has frusto-conical and axially parallel bores 11 extending between its faces 13, 14. The periphery of each of the openings 16 in face 14 of slab 10 is surrounded by a flange 17. Grooves 19 in the face 14 permit the slab to be cut into sections 20 each of which may be provided with a handle (Fig. 3). The handle is made up of two rectangular portions made of metal or synthetic resin and joined along one edge either by adhesive tape or by means of pegs 26 and holes 27. The edge of each rectangular portion opposite the joined edge engages within the spaces between adjacent rows of flanges 17 while protuberances (24) engage the face 13. For transport, e.g. by post, the sections 20 may be enclosed in a housing, made preferably of expanded polystyrene, and comprising two identical halves, each of which 28 is divided into a first chamber 29 for receiving the section 20 and a second chamber 30 for receiving the exposed parts of the plants. A shelf 31 separates the two chambers and has slots 32 through which plant stems pass. The storage means may alternatively be a sheet (33) with integral frusto-conical plantreceiving spaces (34) produced by vacuum drawing from a flat sheet of thermoplastics material, the lower ends (36) of the spaces being opened by cutting away the drawn sheet at the appropriate places. To ensure that compost remains in the spaces a bar, cross, or spider across the smaller end of the space may be provided
