Abstract

1511242 Adhesive tapes EVODE Ltd 2 May 1975 [4 Feb 1974] 04965/74 Heading B2E An electrically conductive tape for adhesively bonding two surfaces comprises an electrically conductive substrate e.g. of aluminium foil which is preferably perforated, having a continuous or discontinuous layer on one or both faces of an adhesive which under the influence of heat undergoes an irreversible cross-linking reaction. The conductive substrate is heated by passage of an electric current while maintaining the tape in contact with the surfaces to be bonded, thereby heating the adhesive and inducing formation of a permanent adhesive bond by at least partial curing of the adhesive. The adhesive, which is preferably flowable at the elevated temperature, suitably possesses sufficient tack at ordinary temperatures to form a temporary adhesive bond before heating. Suitable adhesives are epoxy resins, phenol-formaldehyde resins, melamine resins, aldehydic resins, polyamides, polyimides, polyimidazoles, isocyanate-polyester compositions and polymers of vinyl monomers capable of cross-linking. The adhesive may contain particulate or fibrous fillers and modifying agents enclosed in micro-capsules which are released when the adhesive is heated.
