1520873 Adhesive coatings EVODE HOLDINGS Ltd 12 Aug 1975 [15 July 1974] 31152/74 Heading B2E An adhesive tape or strip comprising a substrate coated with an adhesive system comprising a layer of thermosetting adhesive and a distinct layer of non-thermosetting adhesive, the layers being disposed side by side on the substrate, is used to make an adhesive joint e.g. an overlapping joint between two surfaces, one of which may be the said substrate, by bringing the surfaces together with the adhesive system between them and hardening or allowing the thermosetting adhesive to harden. The substrate may be metal e.g. aluminium foil, steel strip, natural or synthetic fibre tape or glass fibre tape, and may be porous or perforated to allow adhesive to flow through to the other side from which it is applied or may be coated on both sides. Alternatively the substrate may be release-coated and used to transfer the adhesive to other surfaces to be adhesively joined. The non- thermosetting adhesive may be a pressure-sensitive or contact or hot melt adhesive e.g. Acrylates, polyurethanes, styrene-butadiene copolymers, natural rubbers, polyisobutylenes, acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymers, polyvinylethers, polychloroprenes, bitumens, polyvinyl acetate, polyamides, polyesters, polyethylene and polystyrene polymers and co-polymers, resins, waxes, polysulphides, drying oil/filler and bitumen/filler mixtures and natural or synthetic rubber latexes. Thermosetting adhesives are epoxides, unsaturated polyesters, polyurethanes, epoxide/phenolics and epoxide/ nitriles, silicones, polyimides, melamine/urea/ or phenol/formaldehyde resins, and inorganic silicates. The adhesives are applied by brushing on of solvent solutions or transferred from release-coated tape. Hardening may be spontaneous or accelerated by heating of the joined articles.
