Abstract

1510494 Processing radioactive waste VEREINIGTE EDELSTAHLWERKE AG and OSTERREICHISCHE STUDIENGESELLSCHAFT FUR ATOMENERGIE GmbH 18 Aug 1975 [22 Aug 1974] 34270/75 Heading G6R Particulate solid radioactive or toxic substance is embedded in a solid binder by introducing the binder in liquid form and the substance into a storage vessel 4 which, when full, is replaced by another vessel, sub-atmospheric pressure being maintained in the two vessels during filling and change-over. As shown, concentrated liquid waste is dried in a film evaporator 3 and drops into the drum 4 carried by a support 15 movable about axis 19; molten bitumen is fed through a spray 10 from heated storage vessel 8. When the drum 4 is full, valve 7 and flap 25 are closed and the support 15 is moved so that the full drum is replaced by another drum, the full drum being removed by lowering a base plate 21 of the support 15. A reduced pressure in the evaporator 3 and the filling installation is maintained by vacuum pump 11. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), a third position for the drums is provided where radiocactive combustion ash is introduced by a screw conveyer. Other liquid binders referred to and molten asphalt, tar, thermoplastics, curable liquid synthetic resins, bitumen emulsions, and cement slurry.
