Abstract
1510337 Textured multifilament yarns TORAY INDUSTRIES INC 4 July 1975 [15 July 1974] 28197/75 Heading D1F A substantially non-twisted multifilament yarn 20 is bulked by running it over a heated pin 26 under a tension of 10 to 120 mg/d whilst vibrating the yarn so that certain filaments contact the pin before other filaments and at such a speed that the yarn is not uniformly heated. Preferably the yarn is caused to vibrate as it passes over the pin by means 25 which may be a fluid jet, a rotating impeller or an electrically oscillated vibrator. Roller 27 is rotated at a lower peripheral speed than roller 24 in order to overfeed the yarn and thus counteract the contraction of the yarn on contacting heated pin 26. Preferably the bulked yarn is passed over a second heater (plate 28) situated between rollers 27 and 29, which rotate at the same peripheral speed, in order to eliminate loops in the filaments. Pin 26 is at a temperature between the second (glass) transition temperature of the yarn and the melting point of the yarn whilst plate 28 is at a lower temperature of between the second transition point and 25‹C below the yarn melting point. The filaments may be of polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene oxybenzoate, a copolymer containing at least 70% of these repeating units, nylon 6, polyolefin or a vinyl polymer, and may be of triangular cross-section, various yarn parameters and methods of determining them are specified. The yarn may be plain woven or knitted to give a bulky evenly dyeable fabric. Woven fabrics do not show dye streakiness.
