Abstract
1509772 Thermal switches STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 27 March 1975 123890/75 Heading H1N A temperature responsive electrical switch comprises a one-piece chamber 11 containing a gas or vapour or source of gas or vapour and sealed by a flexible conductive diaphragm 15 having the shape as shown and welded or soldered to the chamber 11, which diaphragm 15 is deflected into abutment with one or more annular contacts 14, mounted on an insulating member 19 when the gas or vapour is heated. In one embodiment, the diaphragm 15 comprises a snap acting plated, phosphor bronze member which is reset automatically or by a push button when the gas or vapour cools. The material in the chamber 11 may be a fluorocarbon, a solid which sublimates or a gas such as hydrogen or nitrogen which is absorbed on a charcoal or molecular sieve pellet. The material may be heated by a heater element 21, the delay between switching on the current through the heater 21 and the operation of the switch producing a thermal delay switch.
