Abstract

1508950 Solar heating D J LIGHTFOOT 16 Dec 1976 52582/76 Heading F4U A solar collector comprises a housing 24 provided with a transparent cover 29 and containing a reflector 33 and a heat collector tube 39 through which water or air to be heated is passed. The reflector is formed of aluminium or stainless steel and has a curvature in the shape of section of a hyperbolic spiral. The cover 29 comprises a double pane, the upper pane 31 being made of a polyvinyl fluoride plastics film which is opaque to infra-red radiation and the lower pane 32 being made of transparent fibre glass. The tube 39 is of triangular cross-section and is made of aluminium formed by extrusion. The inner surfaces of the tube walls are formed with fins 44 and the outer surfaces are coated with a black heat absorbing. material. A bank of collectors connected in series, parallel or series-parallel, may be mounted on the roof or a wall of a building, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown) and connected in a circuit including a hot water storage vessel on a hot air thermal storage system. When air is used as the heat transfer fluid, it may be used for drying grain.
