Abstract

1508130 Transistor oscillators THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 22 July 1975 [24 July 1974] 32761/74 Heading H3T [Also in Division H2] In an emergency lighting system in which, when the mains fail, a fluorescent lamp 24 is supplied by a battery via an inverter 19, the inverter consists of a transistor 25 which automatically becomes conductive when the mains fail, current then flowing through the primary 27 of a current transformer 28 and the primary 26 of the inverter transformer 21. As soon as transformer 28 saturates, owing to cascade action, the primary current collapses causing the secondary current to kick back and the transistor 25 to switch off. Similarly, the current in the primary of transformer 21 reverses and A.C. is induced in the secondary. The value of variable resistor 33 governs the saturation time of transformer 28 and thus the inverter output. A boosting circuit 22 is provided to initially boost the output of the inverter for a predetermined time by connecting a resistor 38 across variable resistor 33.
