Abstract

1507549 Dehydrogenating C 3 -C 8 paraffins BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 5 July 1976 [17 July 1975 20 Nov 1975 11 June 1976] 30012/75 47829/75 and 24296/76 Heading C5E Olefins are produced by dehydrogenating C 3 -C 8 saturated hydrocarbons in the substantial absence of oxygen with a catalyst comprising elemental gallium or a compound of gallium deposited on a support, said deydrogenation being carried out without pre-reduction of the catalyst prior to contact with the feedstock. The support may be alumina, silica, activated carbon or refractory gallium oxide. Alumina and silica supports with surface hydroxy groups may have them ion-exchanged with gallium and optionally Al, Fe or Ni. The dehydrogenation may be carried out at 500-600‹C. and 1-20 atmospheres in an atmosphere of H 2 . Examples describe the preparation of propylene and butenes, using a Ga 2 O 3 /SiO 2 catalyst.
