The subject-matter of this specification is substantially the same as that described in Specification 1,132,865, except that a silicate carrier is employed in the catalyst, specifically synthetic magnesium silicate; no reference is made to a binder; the inner surface area of the catalyst should exceed 20 m<SP>2</SP>/gm; and the range of nickel in the catalyst is 25 to 65% b.w.
