1507778 Aromatizing unsaturated hydrocarbons BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 5 July 1976 [17 July 1975 20 Nov 1975 11 June 1976] 27979/76 27978/76 and 24297/76 Divided out of 1507549 Heading C5E Aromatic hydrocarbons are produced by subjecting an unsaturated hydrocarbon having at least 6 carbon atoms to aromatization in the presence of a catalyst comprising elemental gallium or a compound of gallium deposited on a support. The unsaturated hydrocarbon starting material may be produced by dimerising a C 3 -C 8 monolefin, which may itself be produced by dehydrogenating a C 3 -C 8 saturated hydrocarbon, each of these reactions being carried out in the presence of the aromatization catalyst containing gallium. The three reactions may be carried out in a single step in one reactor. The catalyst support may be Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , activated carbon or refractory gallium oxide. Alumina and silica supports having surface hydroxy groups may have them ion-exchanged with gallium and optionally Al, Fe or Ni.
