Abstract

1506674 Load-indicating washers COOPER & TURNER Ltd 17 Jan 1977 [4 Feb 1976] 04446/76 Heading F2H [Also in Division B3] A load-indicating washer of the kind having a plurality of integral raised portions 12 deformed out of a plane surface 11 at circumferentially spaced intervals intermediate its inner and outer peripheries 13, 14, the raised portions 12 being plastically yieldable at a predetermined clamping load to permit deformation at least partly back into the plane face 11 to indicate a required tension of an associated bolt, is characterized by a recess 24 between the inner periphery 13 and the face 11 from which the raised portions project, the recess extending in both the axial and radial directions by a distance not less than 10% of the washer thickness. The recess may be formed by a chamfer, as shown, or may be of rectangular or other cross-section, and is intended to receive a radiused junction between the shank and head of a bolt, not shown, and/or a sealing ring or sealing mastic. Preferably the recess extends axially a distance between 20 and 40% of the washer thickness, and has a radial extent equal to its axial extent Œ25%.
