Abstract

1506093 Welding by pressure VARTA BATTERIE AG 9 Aug 1976 [8 Aug 1975] 33124/76 Heading B3R In a method of spot resistance welding a metal conductor strip to a porous electrode for an electric cell (e.g. for an alkaline storage battery), said porous electrode (e.g. sintered) containing an active material, a chemically reducing agent is applied to the weld area of the porous electrode, before effecting the weld as by application of short pulses of current. In one embodiment a sintered electrode plate containing nickel hydroxide, for use in a nickelcadmium alkaline storage battery, is heated to 90-95‹ C., a few drops of hydrazine hydrate solution (e.g. 60-80% concentration) is applied to the weld area of the electrode plate, and after a few minutes reduction time the plate is dried and the conductor strip welded thereto. In a further embodiment, a reducing agent comprising a sodium boronate solution (e.g. 3-8% concentration) is applied after heating an electrode plate to 95-115‹ C. Other reducing agents are stannous chloride, formic acid, formaldehyde, hydroxylamine.
