Abstract

1505700 Reciprocating pumps KERNFORSCHUNGSANLAGE JULICH GmbH 23 Sept 1975 [4 Oct 1974] 38986/75 Heading F1A [Also in Division B1] Apparatus for the preparation of a plurality of liquid mixtures of differing properties comprises a pump for each liquid supplying a constant quantity per operating cycle, and a programming device arranged to select the number of operating cycles for each pump required to make up each mixture. As shown piston pumps 1, 2 having valves 4 pump respective liquids from containers 6, 7 to a mixing vessel 9, which may be mounted on a sample changer 10 and provided with a magnetic stirrer 14, 15. The pistons and valves 4 are actuated by compressed air from a source 13, and electromagnetic valves 12 in the air supply are controlled by the programming device. This consists of discs 16, 17, one for each pump, which rotate together and corresponding sectors of which are provided with different numbers of apertures see Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown) which pass between light sources 26, 27 and sensors 24, 25, the respective pump performing a stroke each time light falls on a sensor. The disc 16 has bosses (22) between each sector which actuate a switch 23 to operate a time delay which switches off the programme disc motor 18 after each mixing operation until the sample changer 10 has brought a new linking vessel 9 into position. The disc 17 has a boss 19 which actuates a switch 20 on the completion of the programme. Examples relate to the preparation of lithium solutions of 0À1 ppm and 0À25 ppm concentration difference for calibration of an atom absorption apparatus.
