Abstract

1505314 Target display system BARR & STROUD Ltd 25 Jan 1977 [4 Feb 1976] 4312/76 Heading F3C [Also in Division G2] The sight of a gunnery-fire-control target display system includes a dichroic coating 33 between the hypotenuse faces of two rightangled prisms 36, the coating being polerization sensitive and transmissive to radiation entering from an input face 62A of one of the prisms and of wavelength greater than 680 nanometers, while reflective to radiation in the range 425- 680 nanometers. An attenuator (not shown in Fig. 2) is located at the input 62A and/or output 62B face of said prism and comprises (a) a pair of rotatable Polaroid plates at the input face 62A, (b) a rotatable Polaroid plate at the output face 62B, with a dichronic-coated prism pair at the input face but rotated 90 degrees relative to the prism pair 36, (c) at the input, a prism pair as in (b) with an upstream rotatable third prism pair, (d) an input bandstop filter passing only the red and blue, with an output polaroid pair, as (e) as (d) with a red-pass filter instead. The optical characteristics are illustrated. As shown, visible light from a target enters through lens 32 and image rotator 34 for attenuation, polarization and reflection by the attenuator and prism pair 36, for display at an eyepiece 40. An infra-red image of the target produced by a scanner 42 is transmitted through the prism pair 36 on to the eyepiece, which includes a graticle, or on a C.R.T. an elliptical or circular aiming mark (variable in size according to target range) and a triangular bore sight mark (determined from the ballistic parameters). If a phosphor C.R.T. layer is used to produce a green thermal image, then attenuator (d) produces a highly contrasting red and green visible image. A laser 30 bounces a beam off the target for return through the optics to a range finder 37. The range, manual alteration of field of view, weather conditions and ballistic parameters (e.g. calibre and gun barrel bending) are fed to a computer for fire control.
