Abstract

1504634 Measuring tyre traction DUNLOP Ltd 29 May 1975 [12 June 1974] 23826/75 Heading G1N Apparatus for determining the traction of tyres 2 (Fig. 1) fitted to the driven wheels of a motor vehicle 1 comprises a cable 3, incorporating a load cell 4, connecting the vehicle to a stationary winch 10, whereby the vehicle can be accelerated e.g. to a speed of 10-15 Km/hr and a brake applied to the winch to produce a braking force F measured by the load cell 4, which is equal to the traction force Fz plus the inertia force P of the vehicle, where P= mass x deceleration, the latter being measured by an accelerometer fitted on the vehicle. The traction force is plotted on a recorder against the slip of the driven wheels as compared with the speed of a non-driven wheel.
