Abstract

PURPOSE:To avoid collision upon emergency braking and to enable safe driving by operating a slip rate based on a wheel speed of driving wheels and a body speed then operating a body brake distance based on the slip rate and indicating the operation result on an indicator. CONSTITUTION:An optical or a radar doppler type body speed sensor 3 is fixed to the body 15 of an automobile and a wheel speed sensor 5 is fixed to a driving wheel 4. Furthermore, a torque detector 21 is provided and an output signal therefrom is fed together with output signals from the sensors 3, 5 to an arithmetic unit 1. The arithmetic unit 1 operates a slip rate based on the body speed signal and the wheel speed signal then estimates a drive torque T based on an output signal from the torque detector 21, thereafter estimates friction coefficient between the surface of road and tyre based on the slip rate and the driving torque. Then a brake distance is operated based on brake force or decelerating speed which are operated based on the friction coefficient or the driving torque, and indicated on an indicator 2.
