Abstract

1504438 Laminates DUNLOP Ltd 5 March 1975 [8 March 1974] 10435/74 Addition to 1420955 Headings B5N and B5A A rubber-plastics composite is produced by contacting a vulcanized or vulcanizable fluoroelastomer which is a copolymer of vinylidene fluoride with at least one other fluoro-monomer selected from hexafluoropropene, pentafluoropropenes, chlorotrifluoroethylene, tetrafluoroethylene, dichlorodifluoroethylene, monochloromonofluoroethylenes, fluorinated vinyl esters, perfluoroacrylic acid derivatives and fluorinated alkyl vinyl ethers, with a thermoplastic polyamide, fusing at least the contact surface of the polyamide, cooling the polyamide to solidify it in contact with the fluoroelastomer, and when a vulcanizable fluoro-elastomer is used, vulcanizing the fluoroelastomer before the polyamide is solidified. The polyamide may be fused by direct heating or by molecular vibration methods, e.g. radio frequency techniques. Suitable polyamides are nylons 4 to 13 and nylon 6.6. The rubber and plastics material may be bonded together in a mould, the polyamide optionally being injection moulded on to the fluoroelastomer.
